is tested to ensure an antibacterial activity greater than standard antiseptic
(4% carbolic equivalent)
UMF®
(Unique Manuka Factor) represents bacterial killing power unique to Manuka honey
and was first identified by Dr Peter Molan at the University of Waikato. All
Manuka honey has antibacterial properties, including an enzyme which when
diluted produces hydrogen peroxide, but Manuka honey with a UMF® rating has
extra ability to fight bacteria. This ability varies and Comvita uses an
independent laboratory to verify the UMF® strength of our products. Only honeys
with a UMF® rating higher than 10 can use the UMF® trademark.
