What is a Migraine
Headache?
Migraine
is a disorder, resulting from dysfunction in the vascular system. The disorder
manifests as recurring attacks, which can interfere with normal functioning and
involve throbbing headache pain of moderate to severe intensity. The headache
phase of a migraine is commonly associated with signs and symptoms such as
nausea, and sensitivity to light, sound, or other sensory stimuli, vomiting,
diarrhea, vertigo, tremors, sweating, irritability, confusion or loss of
concentration, and chills. Normal physical activity typically exacerbates the
pain.
Although the exact cause of migraines remains a mystery, some experts believe
that these headaches may be triggered by the contraction and then sudden
dilation of blood vessels in the head. This action appears to release
neurochemicals in the brain that cause pain and inflammation. Migraines are
characterized by vascular system instability, and research shows how feverfew
can prevent vasoconstriction.
What is Feverfew Used
For?
Feverfew has a long history of
use in traditional and folk medicine as a treatment for disorders often
controlled by aspirin, such as fever, headaches and some of the accompanying
symptoms such as nausea and depression and it might therefore prove useful in
treating inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. It has been used externally
as an insect repellent and for treating insect bites. It may also relieve
dizziness, tinnitus, and painful or sluggish menstruation, asthma, coughs,
dermatitis and worms.
Feverfew is probably most famous as an effective treatment for migraine
headaches. Canada's Health Protection Branch recognizes feverfew as a
nonprescription drug for preventing migraines and reducing the nausea and
vomiting that sometimes accompanies them. Researchers at the City of London
Migraine Clinic found that feverfew eliminated about two-thirds of migraines in
a selected group of headache patients, which is similar to the effectiveness of
most migraine drugs. Several articles published in the past decade in British
medical journals catapulted feverfew into recognition as a potential treatment
or prevention of symptoms associated with migraine headaches.
How
Does it Work?
Feverfew's therapeutic powers
were once attributed almost solely to the chemical parthenolide but it is now
thought to affect the body in beneficial ways via a combination of compounds.
Feverfew works to inhibit the release of two inflammatory substances, serotonin
and prostaglandins, both believed to contribute to the onset of migraines. By
inhibiting these substances as well as the production of the chemical histamine,
the herb controls inflammation that constricts the blood vessels in the head,
and prevents blood vessel spasms, which may contribute to headaches. Clinical
tests have shown the use of feverfew may be more effective than other
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), like aspirin for reducing the
frequency and severity of headaches but without the side effects.
